If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. We've all heard it before but do we heed it? I didn't and it almost cost me two grand.

I sell Scentsy and was contacted by text, through my website, which features my phone number. A woman named Emily wanted to surprise her daughter and friends for her birthday with 10 warmers. She claimed to live in Florida, but her daughter was in New York. 'Emily' said she'd mail a check to cover the order.

Although I was excited over such an easy order and commission, my pessimistic husband was skeptical.

Instead of sending the cost of the Scentsy warmers, 'Emily' claimed a mistake was made and her entire check was mailed to me.  She asked me to take out the money she owed and mail back the rest, which made my husband more skeptical.

'Emily' provided the tracking number of the check and when I could expect it to arrive. How could this be anything but legit? My husband didn't agree.

The bull was piled on when 'Emily' claimed she was partially deaf but trusted ME not to screw HER over.

Every text included a prayer or sweet message, making it sound like it came from an elderly woman.  I actually started to feel sorry for her.

Once the check arrived, my husband still didn't buy it.  How could he not?  The check was right there in front of our face. When I notified 'Emily' the money came in the mail, she asked the remainder to be returned with a money voucher pak.

I deposited the check that had a two day hold. I wouldn't place the Scentsy order or send anything back to 'Emily' until it cleared.  It showed the check went through online but I wanted to go to the bank to make sure, since my husband was so skeptical. I couldn't wait to tell him I was right and he was wrong.

The trip to the bank proved I would be eating crow since my husband was right all along. The check was FAKE!

All I could hear was my husband's voice, 'I tried to tell ya.'

Thankfully Americu waived the fee applied for depositing a forged check so we weren't out any money; just time and frustration.

I tried calling the number (813) 693-6399, but wouldn't you know, NO ONE ANSWERED!

I googled the address I was given to send the Scentsy warmers and it was the WALDORF HISTORIA HOTEL. Had I done that in the first place, I would have saved myself the trouble.

NEVER give any personal information to anyone you don't know. Thankfully the only information I sent was my address to mail the check. I'm also glad I was smart enough to wait to see if the check would clear before doing anything.

The moral; if it sounds too good to be true, it IS! Or listen to your husband.
