Christmas has come and gone. What do you do with that Christmas tree now? Usually we throw it on the back deck where it gets covered in snow and tossed to the curb sometime in the Spring. There are better options.

In most places, you can leave it at the curb and it'll be picked up with your regular trash. Or the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority accepts Christmas trees at the Compost Site on Leland Avenue in Utica until January 31st. The trees are chipped and composted for use by area gardeners in the Spring.

Remember to remove decorations, garland, tinsel and lights before you set the tree out for recycling. Wreaths can be thrown out since they are held together with wire and plastic, so they can't be safely composted.

You can drop off your tree Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturday from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm at the Authority's Leland Avenue EcoDrop in Utica until January 31st. Or the Rome EcoDrop on on Perimeter Road 8-4 Monday through Friday and 8-12 on Saturday.
