Tis the season for lawn mowing. Did you know there's one thing you may be doing while mowing the yard that's actually illegal in New York State?

As mowers are being brought out of winter storage, you need to keep this in mind to avoid a fine. Blowing your grass clipping in the road is against the law in New York. You may not only be fined but you could also get sued if the clippings cause an accident.

Police aren't patrolling neighborhoods looking for grass-clipping culprits but they are reminding residents of the law and the dangers associated with it.

NY Vehicle & Traffic Law

Section 1219 of the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits grass clippings and other debris on streets and highways.

No person shall throw or deposit upon any highway any glass bottle, glass, nails, tacks, wire, cans, snow, grass clippings or any other substance likely to injure any person, animal, or vehicle upon such highway.

Grass clippings can reduce traction and cause a motorcycle driver to lose control. If there's an accident, you're responsible.

Remember to keep your clippings in your yard and make the roadways safer for everyone.

No Mow May

Hate to mow? Let it grow for No Mow May. Greenpeace USA is encouraging to resist the call of the mower and leave lawns untouched to help boost biodiversity.

Wildflowers like daisies, clover, and dandelions are fantastic for pollinators, and appear quickly if you don't mow.

Celebrate No Mow May and forget worrying about where those grass clippings end up.
