Maryann Mazzaferro of Rome is taking her love of walking to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness.

This weekend Maryann is off to New York City to take part in the 26 mile Avon Walk for Breast CancerShe's a first time walker and is looking forward to it .  'When I first decided I wanted to do this it seemed a little overwhelming to me. But it's been six months of preparation and I've had a tremendous outpouring of support for this.  It has truly touched my heart to be able to participate in such a wonderful event.'

4000 walkers are expected to take part in the event that raises millions for breast cancer research, prevention and early detection. Through Maryann's fundraising efforts she's been able to make a difference in a number of lives.  'I was able to raise enough money to give 24 women mammograms who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it.  And that to me is such a comfort and such a wonderful feeling. I'm going to think about that on my marathon walk.'

The decision to take part this year was easy for Maryann.  'I've always enjoyed walking.  I walk everyday.  I really wanted to put my love of walking toward something purposeful.  I did some research and found the Avon walk for Breast Cancer.  It's been a rewarding experience.'

The experience for Maryann has her stepping up to make a difference in Central New York.  She's a spokesperson for the Avon Foundation to interest other women to take part next year and generate some interest in Central New York.

We wish Maryann the best in her 26 mile walk that will have her crossing the Brooklyn Bridge and we look forward to seeing all the great pictures when she returns to Rome.
