We reported earlier this week that the average price for a gallon of gas hit $4 in central New York. But, for drivers in Sunday's Daytona 500, they have to cough up a few more bucks.

As reported by WIBX radio's Kristine Bellino the state average is nearly 30 cents higher than the national with the Central New York area among the highest. During these "Frog Days Of Summer", we're used to gas prices going up, then down, then up again. But, why are gas prices so high here in central New York? I was on vacation last week in Cape Cod Massachusetts (a tourist area for sure) and paid $3.53 a gallon for regular last Wednesday, and $3.55 on Monday, when I left.

Gas prices are on the rise. The average nationwide cost of a gallon of gas has risen $.53 since January and analysts predict they will go higher before topping off. The price of gas in the Utica-Rome area has either topped or is fast approaching $4 per gallon giving local motorists pause before heading out to the store for a loaf of bread or visiting friends and neighbors. My wife and I just bought a new car. Our primary consideration was mileage, not bells and whistles or styling. With gas pricesat or above $4 in the Utica-Rome area we realized we had to reconfigure our budget and our driving habits. Fortunately I live close to the radio station so I can bike to work on mild spring and summer mornings. We also are planning short getaways close to home rather than long vacation road trips. There are a number of ways to save money on gas.
