It's only a matter of days before your lawn is ready for its first cut of the season. So, of course, it's a great time to get your mower ready for a new season and replace any defective parts on it.

We turned to Art White at White's Farm Supply for tips on preparing your lawn equipment.

1) Make sure the battery is well charged and the fluids are topped off before you start your mower.

2) If you've stored it in a place where it could be vulnerable to mice or rats, make sure no critters got into the engine to build nests. They tend to build right below the engine cowling, which can be hard for human hands to find. If you start up your mower and smell something unusual, a burning nest might be the culprit.

3) Change the fluids, once you get the mower started and the engine is warm.

4) Sharpen the blades, apply grease where needed, and check all the belts for signs of wear. As Art White says, if a belt is frayed, that's a sign that it could break on you when you need it the most. Save yourself a headache and replace it now! Save the old one for a spare.

5) Check the pressure on the tires. If the rear tires lost pressure, you'll find yourself with uneven grass if you don't fully inflate them! Tires should have full contact across the tread surface for good traction and ride. It's also a great time to jack up the machine to make sure all the wheels are tight.

6) Consider whether you need to upgrade. Now might be a great time to add a mulching blade, or buy a brand-new mower. The crew at White's Farm Supply is happy to give you an estimate on the trade-in value of your current mower and share details on current sales for new mowers!
