Leap Day Facts And Folklore

Those born on the leap year day are called leapling. It's said they have unique, unusual talents and personalities. They also get to choose their birthday, February 28th, or March 1st, so during a leap year, they can celebrate twice.

There is an old Irish tradition on leap day where women were allowed to propose to men. They had to wear a red petticoat to show their intent, and if the man said no, then he would be fined a kiss, a silk dress, or 12 pairs of gloves.

In Scotland leap day is considered as unlucky as Friday 13th for anyone born on that day. The Greeks discouraged getting married in a leap year, let alone leap day. 1 in 5 Greek couples will avoid it.

No man is safe. A day for women to initiate dancing, a date, even marriage. In the United States, we have Sadie Hawkins' Day. A day where single women can run after unmarried men.
