Waking up this morning was a nightmare. Not only did I have to battle the cold temps of -30 to get to work, my car would not start. This is a common problem in the cold. Here's what you can do if your car won't start when it's super cold out:

1) Turn Off All Accessories

This means making sure the radio is off, the heat is off, and even lights. Why's that? These things drain life out of the battery. In normal temps it isn't a big deal, on a cold day, it's a HUGE deal. Wiki reports this will help to maximize your starting power.

2) Turn The Key To Start And Hold It For Up To 10 Seconds

Don't hold it for any longer than 10 seconds! This is critical. Overworking the starter can cause it to overheat. If the engine fails to crank, wait a couple of minutes and try again. Be patient, don't try it right away.

3) Take Advice From This Guy

This helpful video shows you a quick and easy way to start it up. He explains about wiping windows is important, and also patience.

4) Have A Back Up Plan

Always have a good backup plan whether its car pooling, or switching cars with your spouse. It's always good to have a back up plan. I was lucky my coworker lived a few blocks away and could pick me up for work.
