I recently had the opportunity to visit Rutger Park on Rutger Street in Utica and tour Rutger Home number 3. History definitely come alive when you walk through the doors of the nearly 200 year old home. Staged to look like how it did when it was occupied, the beautiful architecture is still a sight to be seen, despite years of aging. Yes, although there are parts of the home that have aged and weathered more than others, all the houses in Rutger Park are definitely a gem to be seen in Utica.
And, the public actually has a chance to view these gems next week. It's part of the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica's "Picnic in the Park." On Saturday June 2 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., attendees will be given guided tours of Rutger Homes number 1 and 3 for $10, have a chance to view an art exhibit in Rutger Home number 4 for $2 and tour Rutger Home number 5 for $2. In addition to tours, there will be food, entertainment, vendors, artisans, a car show, and book signings.
I would like to share with you my tour of Rutger Home number 3 today as part of Zach's Weekly Snaps. This week's theme--Rutger Park.
With the popularity of eBay and craigslist, it has become very easy to get great deals on “gently used” items without leaving the comfort of your home, but as the weather warms up, we can’t deny that there is just something much more exciting about finding those great deals while on the hunt at garage sales all over town.

He must not have been able to find a formal "hoodie". According to Reuters Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg married his longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan Saturday in Palo Alto, California in an intimate backyard ceremony. The wedding was announced as you might expect through a "status update" on his Facebook page. Friends who were invited were led to believe that the occasion was to celebrate something other than a wedding.
‘Duets,’ the new reality singing competition series starring Sugarland vocalist Jennifer Nettles and semi-country singer Kelly Clarkson, debuts this coming Thursday (May 24) in a two-hour premiere. The premise of the show is that established vocalists will partner with neophytes for –you guessed it- a duet! Rather than be judges or mentors, the celebs are performing alongside the hopefuls. Boilermaker Executive Director Tim Reed is thrilled to have the band return.
Recently, USA Today took America on a photo tour of Utica titled "Tough times in Utica". It depicted Utica in an apparent state of disrepair highlighting graffiti and old buildings--the pictures were also taken on a cloudy day nonetheless. The photos were not only seen by USA Today readers, but also readers of the Albany Times-Union saw the photos with the title "Utica struggles". Now, a few days after those photos were published, a new website has emerged to not show the "though times" in Utica, but rather, it embraces the beauty Utica has to offer.
