The first woman in space Sally Ride, died of cancer at the age of 61.  The following was posted on the Sally Ride Science Facebook page.

Sally Ride died peacefully July 23, 2012 after a courageous 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Sally lived her life to the fullest, with boundless energy, curiosity, intelligence, passion, commitment, and love. Her integrity was absolute; her spirit was immeasurable; her approach to life was fearless.

Ride launched into space aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983, at the age of 32. She began Sally Ride Science in 2001 with a mission to educate, engage and inspire all students.

The world has lost another legend.  May she rest in peace.
