Robert Lamphere's story as a farmer started back in 1988. That was the year our father passed away. My brother Robert is the youngest of eight children and we all grew up on a 200 acre dairy farm in the Town of Deerfield. When our father passed away in 1988 my brother was only 13 years old. Our oldest siblings had already moved out of the farm and started families of their own by then. At the age of 13 my brother bucked up without question and took the reins as "farmer." Although he was still in school he committed himself and buckled down to get up bright and early every morning to get the milking and necessary chores done before school and he still made the school bus every morning to finish his education. At my brothers graduation he received an award for being most likely to succeed at his own business. Obviously the teachers and staff at the school recognized his commitment to his farm even then and they were right.

Twenty five years later my brother is still successfully running the family farm. As with every farmer the relentless sacrifice from family functions and events to "get the farming done" goes without saying. At the age of 38 my brother has never traveled out of the state of NY, taken a vacation, and even sacrificed a honeymoon to make sure the farm and animals still had the attention they needed.

Although I agree that every farmer sacrifices on a daily basis I don't know too many that began sacrificing at the age of 13 to operate a dairy farm and keep his family proud!

Thank you Robert Lamphere for what you do everyday. We’ll put you in grand prize drawing for a $2500 gift certificate from White's Farm Supply and a phone call from James Wesley, so he can ‘Thank a Farmer.’
