The state government in Hawaii has approved a first-in-the-nation law that ups the age to purchase cigarettes to 21. Anti-tobacco groups are pushing for similar laws in other states. Could New York be next?

The Hawaii law, which goes into effect in January 2016, was passed in response to a growing number of young people using e-cigarettes, including a statistic that some considered alarming, according to The Verge, among high school students in the state

25 percent of 9th and 10th grade students had used an electronic smoking device at least once and 18 percent used one regularly.

Could another state pass similar legislation? According to Fox News, a bill that ups the smoking age to 21 has passed the California Senate and is pending in the Assembly.

Might New York State follow suit? While there is no legislation being considered in Albany, New York City raised the age to purchase cigarettes to 21 back in 2013. Neighboring New Jersey residents have needed to be 19 to purchase smokes for the last decade.
