Several government funded programs have been developed to encourage new people to give farming a try.  The latest is New York legislation that could put state owned properties in the hands of new farmers.

I was cruising Cornell Cooperative Extension's Face Book page when I came across this article.  The average age of NY Farmers have started to exceed the mid-fifty range, that has many government leaders concerned about the next generation of farmers. Programs like Armed To Farm have been developed to lure veterans into the ag field with start-up loans and educational assistance.  This is the first program that would make land available.

The legislation is in the infancy stage, but the ultimate goal would be lease or sell State owned property to new farmers.  The key word being "new."  The legislation that was passed and is awaiting the Governor's signature, would just compile a list of properties that would be up for consideration.  Read more of the article at the Morning Ag Clips website.
