Free Fishing Day Coming to New York This Saturday

All New Yorkers can celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day with free fishing. The state is waiving the usual license requirement for one day.

This Saturday, September 25 is one of six free fishing days New York plans each year.  Governor Kathy Hocul says they hope to encourage more people to try the sport. It’s also aimed at getting the anglers from neighboring states to try New York’s "world-class" waters.

I encourage new and experienced anglers alike to take advantage of the upcoming Free Fishing Day, which gives everyone the chance to try the sport at no cost and introduce family and friends to a new hobby.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation outlines what they hope to accomplish with the program:

• Try fishing for the first time.
• Haven't fished in a while? Remember the joy of catching a fish again for free!
• Become an ambassador to the sport; take a friend fishing for the first time.
• Invite a friend to New York to fish.
• Take a spouse or significant other fishing.
• Take the family fishing...and don't forget the grandparents!

While fishing won't require a license for the day, all other fishing regulations remain in effect. If you're fishing for the first time or visiting from out of state, the DEC"s website  offers plenty of information on regulations, places to fish, and even first time fishing tips. The sixth, and final, Free Fishing Day in 2021 will be Veterans Day, November 11.
