Heads up Hunters: New York State wildlife officials are now saying hunters are expected to kill fewer deer in the upcoming big game season. The reason? Deer mortality over the past winter.

CNY Central reports because deer mortality over the winter was so high, there will be fewer antlerless deer permits in different parts of the state.

The agency says the number of deer management permits will be reduced by 20 to 30 percent in some areas of high winter mortality."

Have no fear, deer populations are very large in the areas of Central New York, the Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario Plains and some of southeastern New York. That means more permits will be issued there.
