Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite: 3 New York Cities Made the List

There’s one thing nobody wants to bring home after a trip, a night at a hotel, or even a visit somewhere new... bed bugs.

Orkin has released its latest list of cities dealing with the most bed bugs in the country, and several New York spots made the rankings.

New York City, Buffalo, and Syracuse Make the List

New York City continues to have a bed bug problem, landing at Number 12 on Orkin’s list of the worst cities for bed bugs, up three spots.

Buffalo also made the rankings, coming in at Number 35, while Syracuse landed at Number 44, up 6 spots!

Before you start checking every corner of your house, remember — bed bugs don’t mean your home is dirty. These tiny pests are professional hitchhikers. They can crawl into luggage, clothing, backpacks, and used furniture, then make themselves right at home.

How Do You Know If You Have Bed Bugs?

The creepy thing about bed bugs is they’re really good at hiding. They usually come out at night and can hide in mattress seams, box springs, cracks, and even behind headboards.

Some signs to watch for include itchy bites, small blood spots on sheets, tiny dark stains, shed skins, or actually spotting the bugs themselves.

How to Avoid Bringing Them Home

If you’re traveling this summer, experts say there are a few simple things you can do to avoid an unwanted souvenir.

Check hotel mattresses and bedding before unpacking, keep luggage off the floor, and wash clothes after trips using hot water and a high-heat dryer cycle when possible.

Also, be careful with secondhand furniture. That bargain couch might seem like a great deal... until you realize it came with some very unwanted roommates.
