Deerfield Hikers Warned After Bear Sighting
Bear Sighting at Deerfield Trails Has Hikers on Alert
If you're out walking the trails at the Town of Deerfield Wilderness Park, you might want to pay a little extra attention to what’s around you.
A Deerfield resident says he spotted a bear while hiking at 6329 Walker Road, on the western side of the trail system near the entrance to the looped trail—the northwest section of the park.

And before anyone panics, officials say the bear wasn’t acting aggressively. In fact, once it noticed the hiker, it did what most wild animals tend to do… it took off across the trail and headed the other direction.
No chasing, no confrontation, just a quick “you go that way, I’ll go this way” moment in the woods.

Officials Say: Stay Alert, This Is Still Bear Country
Even though everything ended safely, members of the public are being reminded to use caution while enjoying the trails. That means being aware of your surroundings, making some noise while you walk, and not assuming you’re alone out there.

The good news is this situation didn’t turn into anything dangerous, and there’s no indication the bear was hanging around the area.
But wildlife officials always recommend the same thing—if you’re hiking, stay aware, keep your distance if you do see an animal, and don’t assume the woods are empty just because the trail looks quiet.
And if you do see something unexpected… it might just be a reminder that you’re not the only one enjoying Deerfield’s trails this time of year.
