Every so often, a word or phrase enters our language that is used over and over and over...and after a while, it becomes meaningless.

"Whatever." For the second straight year, that no-meaning response has been tapped as the most annoying word but its power to irritate is slipping. As The Examiner reported last year, "whatever" was selected by a whopping 47 percent of those polled by Marist College of Poughkeepsie, as a really annoying word, and while it is still number one, it slipped to just 39 percent this year. In second place is the word "like" at 28 percent, with the phrase "you know what I mean" at 15 percent. "To tell you the truth" and "actually" were also found to be bothersome. "(National Examiner)
