104-Year-Old WWII Veteran is Asking for Valentine’s Day Cards

Major Bill White has seen a lot in his long lifetime, and this Valentine's Day, he's recruiting people from all across the world for a neat project to add to his bookshelf.

The 104-year-old served 30 years in active duty with the U.S. Marine Corp and 54 years in retirement. He told FOX40 about fighting in World War II and surviving the Battle of Iwo Jima, a courageous feat for which he received a Purple Heart.

"The fact that I even survived is something. There weren’t too many of us,” White told FOX40. "When I was wounded, I didn’t have any choice in the matter. A grenade [blew] up about 6 inches from me."

White now lives in Stockton, California, where he's found a new hobby in scrapbooking, keeping the many memories of his life organized by year on his bookshelf, according to FOX40. Now, he's started his next project--collecting Valentine's Day cards from people across the world.

“I'll save every one of them like I've been saving little things that have come up until right now and they’ll be a personal part of my history,” White told FOX40.

As for White's secret to living such a long and full life, he said to "just keep breathing."

"I can't think of anything else. I can give you all sorts of ideas and suggestions but if you're not breathing, they don't mean anything,” White told FOX40.
