C'mon now, even if you are a die-hard snow hater wouldn't you like to have a white Christmas? So far mother nature has been holding back on the snow and cold we here in the Mohawk Valley associate with the holidays but with less than a week to go are things about to change?
While many local residents are dreaming of a white Christmas area businesses that rely on snow to fuel their profits are becoming concerned. Last years mild winter put a strain of merchants who service the needs of winter sports enthusiasts as well those who supply basic snow removal essentials such as shovels, roof rakes and heating supplies like wood and pellet stoves. Some business owners are beginning to worry about a repeat.
To some people the mild winter of 2011-12 is a blessing but to snowmobile enthusiasts and those whose businesses depend on them it had been a nightmare. In a report filed by WKTV.com the head of the New York State Snowmobile Association, Gary Broderick, said that the lack of snow has had an economic ripple effect.
This years mild winter has claimed another victim. According to a report from WKTV.com Miller's Mills Ice Harvest officials have cancelled the event for the 3rd time in 7 years due to poor ice conditions. Apparently there is some ice in the middle of the pond but not enough along the shoreline to provide safe conditions for spectators. The news isn't all bad however.
Admit it. So far our central New York winter hasn't been much of a winter. And, statistics back up the fact that this is one of the mildest winters in quite a while.
He's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! Old Man Winter has returned to central New York, and I've got the shovel to prove it. We knew it couldn't last forever - green grass and rain in the middle of January.
