He was the epitome of '80's cool. Sonny Crockett, played by Don Johnson, gave "Miami Vice" the fashion look every guy wanted. A loose suit over a T-shirt and deck shoes with no socks, now that was cool. Don Johnson, however, was fighting his own demons. "I was a multiple substance kind of guy", he tells Rolling Stone, "I would drink, smoke pot, do cocaine, maybe eat a Quaalude. I'd wake up the next morning feeling like I'd been hit by a truck". Not so anymore.

You know it's fall when apple cider is in season, football is back, and the leaves on the Greg "Splashin'" McShea lawn need raking (I'll get to it, I'll get to it). And, you know it's fall when "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" featuring the "Peanuts" gang starts showing up on TV. It was first broadcast in 1966 and has been on TV every year since. It's one of our favorite Halloween-themed TV shows.

The 1960s turned out memorable sitcoms, and on this day in 1961 "The Dick Van Dyke Show" premiered on CBS-TV. The show propelled the career of comedian Dick Van Dyke and launched the celebrity of Mary Tyler Moore. It was written by comic Carl Reiner, who appeared periodically as Alan Brady, the fictitious star of a comedy show that Van Dyke and gang were writers for. The show latest five seasons through 1966 but can be seen in reruns.

One of our all-time favorite sitcoms debuted on CBS TV 50 years ago today in 1962, "The Beverly Hillbillies". Just to refresh your memory, the show was based on the story of hillbilly Jed Clampett (played by Buddy Ebsen) and his family striking oil on his backwoods property, and moving the whole gang to swanky Beverly Hills. The show was hilarious, and lasted nine seasons through 1971.
