We hope you had a Happy Easter Sunday yesterday, and to our Canadian friends, we wish you a good Easter Monday. That's right, while most of us are back to work today, it's a holiday for many in Canada.
Polliwog is a Canadian by birth but only occasionally visits her former homeland so her knowledge of common "Canadianisms" may be a bit rusty. Sure, she can handle, "Eh" and "hoser" with ease but how about some other expressions native to our neighbors to the north.
Although she was born and raised north of the border Polliwog is not your everyday Canadian. What I mean by that is that she is not a big hockey fan. Most all of Canada will be heading to their pharmacy today for some anxiety medication on news that the NHL has locked out its players in a contract dispute risking a second work stoppage in less than 10 years. What are the odds of NHL hockey this season?
Don't get me wrong, I love living in the USA but if for some reason I got kicked out, Canada would be my second choice. Okay, maybe my third after Australia. The friendliness of the people, the lifestyle and the variety of cultures would make me feel right at home. However if you visit our neighbors to the north--even for just a few days like I just did--be prepared for some differences and a ounce or two of confusion. I came up with a little list of things to prepare for.
If you don't live in the same town you grew up in, it's always nice to take a trip home once in awhile. The highlight is seeing family and friends you haven't seen since the last time you were home. But it's also nice to see how your town has grown or how small your school looks now that you're older. It always seemed so big when we were kids, didn't it. Being Canadian there are a number of things I miss, since I can't get them now in the states. There are so many things I stock up on when I'm home in Gananoque Ontario
