A man is alive thanks to an off duty, kilt wearing New York State Police Sergeant and two civilians.

Sergeant Robert Bloom III was on his way to the Broome County Academy Graduation to play the bagpipes and drums when he saw smoke at the Tioga Terrace in Apalachin just after noon Friday, November 1st.

When he arrived, Bloom discovered a man, who is bedridden, was trapped inside. Sergeant Bloom, the man’s father and a neighbor were able to get the man into a wheelchair and get him out of the burning home.
