I'm not sure their has been an official declaration; but let's face it, Poinsettias are the flower of the holidays.  Many use them for decorating from Thanksgiving through the New Year.  The Master Gardeners at Cornell Cooperative Extension have some tips on keeping them looking good.

After purchasing the poinsettias’ inspect them for bugs. If necessary wash the affected insect areas with soapy water or dab with an alcohol drenched Q-tip.

Poinsettias’ tropical origins requires a humidity balancing act of water and exposure to sunlight. If it is in bloom place your poinsettia in a sunny window, remember to keep them away from cold glass (drafts). It will not harm them to be placed in filtered sunlight for periods of time.

As sunlight is increased so does the frequency of their watering. Always let the soil be dry to the touch before watering. Make sure they are in a container that allows complete drainage. As with any houseplant pinch back dead or drying leaves.

To extend the blooming period place the poinsettias’ in a cool room (55-70 degrees) at night.
