On this day, July 4th, 1960, Hawaii, our 50th state had its star added to the American Flag. Earlier, the flag consisted of 49 stars, with the addition of Alaska as our 49th state in 1959.

Hawaii played a pivotal role in the U.S. entry into World War II, site of the Pearl Harbor attack. Over the years, Hawaii has been known as a top tourist attraction with its beautiful white sand beaches and palm trees, and is home to Diamond Head, active volcanoes, the backdrop for the TV series "Hawaii Five-O", and if that weren't enough, Hawaii is the birthplace of President Barack Obama, making him the first U.S. president to be born in Hawaii. So as we fly the American Flag today on Independence Day, give an extra salute to Hawaii.
