The cliche' "for young and old alike" really applies to the celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day at the Salmon River Hatchery outside of Altmar, NY in Oswego County. The 20th Annual Open House and Family Day is Saturday, September 24 from 9 to 4.

Tours of the hatchery include the fish ladder where you can actually watch the salmon migration.  There's also the opportunity to see "behind-the-scenes access to the inner workings" of the facility.

Many "outdoor recreation groups, conservation organizations, fishing and hunting clubs" will provide demonstrations on how to cast a fishing rod and tie flies.  Kids can participate in a laser shooting range, observe the aquatic life of Beaverdam Brook, and learn about rare and threatened fish species in New York State.

The Salmon River Hatchery is located at 2133 County Route 22, Altmar, Oswego County, and admission is free. Specific questions about the day's events can be addressed by contacting Fran Verdoliva at 315-298-7605.
