The highway that runs through Griffiss Park in Rome is undergoing a major reconstruction, and first visible phase began this week.  Thousands of drivers are noticing that dozens of trees that stood near the highway are gone.

Route 825 (Griffiss Parkway) will be widened to 4 lanes for the entire length of the road.  The project will cover nearly one mile of the road from the round-a-bout to Mohawk Glen.

As for the trees, a total of nearly 120 will be removed to clear land for the road.  In addition to the widening, 2 more roundabouts will be added.  One will replace the traffic light at the intersection of the parkway and Floyd Ave, the other will be where Hangar Road meets the parkway.

The Rome Sentinel reports that the $8.8 million project will be completed by sometime next fall.  As Griffiss Park adds new industry, the volume of traffic continues to grow as well.
