Latest crop scouting report from Cornell Cooperative Extension shows the 1st cutting of hay is done and should be a good one.  The experts also have some tips on what to do to prepare the fields for the 2nd cutting.

Many grass and mixed alfalfa –grass stands were harvested as dry hay for the week of June 13.

Conditions were perfect for drying so folks should have some good, dust and mold free baled hay.

Looking ahead to the 2nd cut, Cornell suggests "consider applying 50-75lbs of N/acre after harvest."  Manure applications should stop 5 days after harvest to protect alfalfa growth.  Also think about conducting soil samples if a field hasn't received manure application int he last 3 years as potash will start to dwindle.
