Chris Stapleton was the big winner at the CMA Awards, picking up New Artist , Male Vocalist and Album of the year honors. And his performance with Justin Timberlake will go down in CMA history. But who is Chris Stapleton.

Before the awards show many outside of Nashville hadn't heard of Stapleton, but you've heard his work. He's written over 150 songs for artists like Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley and even pop sensation Adele. Six have reached #1 including Darius Rucker's 'Come Back Song,' Luke Bryan's 'Drink a Beer,' Josh Turner's 'Your Man' and Kenny Chesney's 'Never Wanted Nothing More.'

Stapleton is a Kentucky native who's father is a coal miner. He moved to Nashville in 2001 and has since been nominated for three Grammy Awards and picked up the International Bluegrass Music Association Emerging Artist of the Year award as a member of The SteelDrivers.

In 2010 Stapleton left The Steel Drivers and joined the Southern Rock group The Jompson Brothers until 2013 when he went solo.

Stapleton's award winning album 'Traveller' was inspired by his father. He wrote the title track after he passed away, during a road trip with his wife Morgane.
