What corn, hay and soybean varieties perform best in Central New York? If there were only an easy answer. Jeff Miller with Cornell Cooperative Extension says the best tip is do your homework.

Seed sales personnel will be knocking on farmers doors very soon asking for seed orders for next year’s crops.  Seed is one of the more expensive crop inputs now and there are many choices with plants that will have very different characteristics.

Some local seedsman plant variety plots in our area with a number of their varieties so growers can view them during the season and review local yield results. Remember to give more weight to results that come from multiple locations over multiple years.  Cornell does independent variety trials for a number of crops. Here's the results from those studies:

 

Cornell also asks local seedsman to pick the three varieties that perform best in our area for soybeans, corn grain, corn silage, wheat and alfalfa and to list their characteristics. This information is then published in Cornell's monthly newsletter.
