Coming up on Monday, you can witness one of the rarest astronomical events right here in Upstate New York. We are talking about Mercury passing between Earth and the sun, the Mercury Transit.

Known as the transit of Mercury, it happens only about 13 times a century. The last one was 2006, and the next one after Monday is in 2019. After that, the next transit will take place in 2032.

So what in the world is a transit anyways? According to Syracuse.com, a transit is when one of the closer planets to the sun, Mercury or Venus, passes directly between Earth and the sun. You can only view this event through a high-power telescopes with sun filters to prevent eye damage.

Mercury will be visible across the sun from 7:12 a.m. to 2:42 p.m. Eastern time on Monday. In Marcellus, you can watch this event at the Baltimore Woods Nature Center, 4007 Bishop Hill Road between 8AM to 10AM. The cost for members is $6, and for non-members $9. You can call for more details at (315) 673-1350.
