Is It Fried Dough Or Pizza Fritte?
Fried dough is also called pizza fritte in Italian, and in Lebanese it's called zalabia. Fried dough is also known as fry dough, fry bread (bannock), fried bread, doughboys, elephant ears, scones, pizza fritte, and frying saucers.
How Is It Made?
Fried dough is made by deep-frying a portion of risen yeast dough. Then, the dough gets a weird, bubbly appearance from being fried. You can either eat it like that, or add amazing toppings like granulated sugar, powdered sugar, cinnamon, fruit sauce, chocolate sauce, cheese, maple syrup, whipped cream, tomato sauce, garlic butter, lemon juice, honey, butter, nuts, or a combination of these. You commonly find these treats at fairs and festivals all over New York.
