For Americans, watching the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfold through film and photos, is gutwrenching.
Sometimes we take for granted the country in which we live and the freedoms we possess. In reality, a shift of the wind and it could be any one of us in a similar situation as those in Ukraine and that's a tough pill to swallow.
It's a helpless feeling to watch elderly people struggle to walk away from their lifelong homes and across the border into the safety of neighboring countries or to see photos of parents embracing their children not only to comfort them but to protect their eyes from seeing the surrounding destruction.
New York is home to 1.6 million Russians and 148,700 Ukrainians. What is happening right now in their birth-land is a punch in the gut for people from both countries who now call America home and they are feeling just as helpless as you are. There are ways to help though- ways that will make an actual impact in the lives of those who are suffering.
