We all did it in grade school and it can still be fun to do now, germinating your own seeds. It can be done inexpensively with these tips from the Master Gardeners at Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Your first step is choosing what vessel to use for germinating your seeds.  There's no need to spend a lot of money on buying pots, the master gardeners suggest using; Keurig cups, toilet paper rolls, paper cups or pots made from newspaper.
If you do use pots, new or reused, be sure they have been sterilized.  Soak the pots in a bleach and water solution, (9 parts water to 1 part bleach), then soak and rinse with water and dry.

Select a good potting soil medium to start the seeds.  After sowing the seeds, cover with plastic wrap to retain moisture. As soon as germination starts, remove the plastic wrap. Water with a spray bottle to keep potting medium moist.  Sunlight from a window or light from lamps will help the seeds germinate and grow.
