
Things Only Central New Yorkers Can Brag About
California may have sunshine, beaches and Hollywood. Mickey Mouse and fresh oranges can be found in Florida but there are a few things that only comes from Central New York. Here's 11 things we can brag about besides New York City.
ERIN HAMLIN
Olympic bronze medalist Erin Hamlin calls Central New York home. The luger hails from Remsen and when she's not training in Lake Placid or racing down luge tracks around the world, she can been seen at several local events in the community.
BOILERMAKER
The Boilermaker road race is among the largest in the country and attracts runners from all over the world. The race that began in 1978 not only sees thousands taking part in the run or walk but thousands more lining the streets to cheer everyone on.
ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS
You can enjoy 160 miles of beauty in the Adirondack Mountains. From hiking trails and majestic waterfalls to camp sites and scenery that goes on forever, there's plenty to do in the Adirondacks.
DICK CLARK
Before American Bandstand and Rockin' New Years Eve, Dick Clark who was born in Mount Vernon, New York got his start working in the mailroom at WRUN radio. After graduating Syracuse University he returned to WRUN and went by the name Dick Clay.
FOOD
From chicken riggies and greens to tomato pie and upside down pizza, Central New York is home to some of the best cuisine you won't find anywhere else. Ask anyone who's not from the area for greens and they may send you to the nearest golf course.
SARANAC BEER
FX Matt Brewery produces Saranac craft beer, including Utica Club. It's also home to Saranac Thursdays, where thousands enjoy local brews and bands every Thursday, every summer.
FORT STANWIX
Construction on Fort Stanwix began in 1758 but wasn't complete until 4 years later. The Fort was built to "guard a portage between the main waterways." It was also the site of the Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1768 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
RAINBOW
If you're from Central New York, you know Rainbow isn't something you see in the sky. He's the guy who is seen around Varick Street with his guitar entertaining anyone who walks by.
UTICA COMETS
Their second year in Utica, the Comets made it all the way to the Calder Cup finals. Fans packed the Aud, causing a white out for every home game. The new season is no different, with a sell out crowd every time the home team hits the ice.
ROGUE COW
Having a cow on the loose is nothing to brag about but having one evade capture for almost four months and making national headlines is. It took four cowboys on horses to trot into town and lasso the loose cow that had its own Facebook page and parody song.
LARGEST WATERING CAN
Utica is home to the largest watering can. The 15.5 foot tall metal sculpture sits at the Utica zoo and is listed in the Guinness World Records books.
