Every summer we head to the Midwest to visit family and enjoy country living.  Things seem to move a bit slower there.  I know we don't live in the hustle and bustle of New York City, even though everyone assumes it when they see your New York plates, but life moves faster here than in the Midwest.  At least faster than where my in-laws live.  I'm talking dirt road for miles and miles and corn as far as the eye can see.  It's a 30 minutes drive to anything.  Groceries, doctor offices or Wal-Mart.  If you want to go shopping at the mall you'll have to drive a hour.  On the other hand, you can sit in your yard and not see or hear a car for hours.  There are stars in the sky for as far as the eye can see and so many lightning bugs you just have to wait long enough and one will fly right into your lap.

My daughter went fishing and caught her first catfish.  She even dug holes around the pond to get her own worms.  We planned a day with the grand kids to go to a water park, but of course it rained and we had to change plans.  We all went to an indoor arcade with go-karts and games instead.  If you want to feel young again, spend the day with a three year old. Their enthusiasm for everything will help you appreciate life.  Chasing them around on the other hand may wear you out and make you feel old by the end of the day, but it's worth it.

Tadpole and I played several rounds of golf on several different courses.  From cow pastures to tee boxes nicer than most greens.  And I've realized it doesn't matter how nice the course is, you can still shoot an 8 on any hole on any course.

I had several pictures of our trip, including the dirt roads surrounded by miles and miles of corn and playing with the grand kids, but we lost them all when Tadpole dropped his cell phone into his coffee half way through our trip.  We tried the rice trick to save it, but I think the cream and sugar were the final straw.  On the bright side, no one from work could contact us for days.

If you ever want a peaceful vacation, head to the country and leave your cell phone behind.
