Will, a K9 with the New York State Police has died in the line of duty.

The K9 was killed October 23, 2017. At around 11:00 p.m. the New York State Police were assisting the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office with a search warrant at a home on Woodcreek Road in the Town of Greig.

Trooper Shaun R. Smith, along with his partner, K9 Will, were at the residence to assist. A pit bull dog ran from the home and began to attack K9 Will. Trooper Smith shot the pit bull in the leg.

An investigation into the shooting shows the bullet ricocheted off the driveway, and hit K9 Will in the stomach. He was taken to the Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Lowville where he passed away.

K9 Will was named after Trooper William G. Doyle, who was shot and killed by escapees from a mental institution on December 14, 1967.

The investigation is continuing.
