New York Laws Taking Effect in 2018

A New Year means new laws taking effect in New York State. Here's everything you need to know for 2018.

Paid Family Leave

Beginning January 1, 2018, New York will have the Nation's most comprehensive and progressive Family Leave plan in place, providing an eight week benefit funded through employee payroll deductions at no cost to employers.

Cleaning Snow from Cars

Drivers must clean snow and ice from vehicles before hitting the road, and not just the windshield. Bill S395A says "motor vehicles, with certain exceptions, shall not be operated with an accumulation of snow or ice on the surface." Drivers can be fined $150.

Child and Dependent Care Credit

The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit expands for taxpayers with incomes between $50,000 and $150,000 and also expands the current cap on child care expenses from $6,000 to $9,000, depending on number of children, for families with up to five children.

Epinephrine Auto Injectors

A new law authorizes certain school employees to administer epinephrine auto injectors in an emergency.

Improve Safety on Snowmobile Trails

A new law limits the use of snowmobile trails to those designed to be used on public trails and adjusts the penalties for operating an unregistered snowmobile, failing to renew a snowmobile registration and improperly displaying a snowmobile registration number.

Seatbelt Requirements

A taxi or livery vehicle driver must wear a seatbelt and every front seat passenger must have one on as well.
