UPDATED 4:26 p.m. - State Police have identified the man who died after being swept away by floodwaters on Factory Brook Road in the Herkimer County Town of Norway last night.

Police say 82-year old John Connery of Glenville left his vehicle and began to walk toward a witness and back through the floodwaters he had just driven through.

They say due to the strong current, the man lost his footing, was washed downstream and was unable to help Connery.

Connery was found dead a quarter-mile downstream. this morning.

At least one person has lost their life in Herkimer County in the rising flood waters and heavy rains that have devastated areas of central New York.

State Police officials are still working to confirm the man's identity, but say it appears his vehicle became disabled sometime after 10:00 p.m. Thursday night. They believe the man got out of the vehicle and was swept away by flood waters. His body was found late this morning near Military Road in Norway, state police said.

Meanwhile, a State of Emergency continues in many central New York counties, including Oneida and Herkimer. A Flood Watch continues until 7:00 p.m. Friday night.
