A local law is being proposed that would establish a snowmobiling season in Oneida County.

Board of Legislators Chairman Gerald Fiorini, County Executive Anthony Picente, Sheriff Rob Maciol and representatives of snowmobiling organizations were at DDS Motor Sports on Wednesday to discuss the law.

Picente says the proposal aims to preserve snowmobile trails, protect landowners who provide access to trails and ensure the safety of snowmobilers on the trails.

“Oneida County is home to more than 600 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and snowmobiling is a significant contributor to our local economy,” said Picente. “Ensuring that this vibrant trail network remains in place for local and visiting riders, while respecting the landowners who grant access and usage, is paramount.”

The snowmobiling season would open one day after the last day of the state-set Big Game Season and end on April 15th.

The proposed local law will be voted on by the Board of Legislators at its October meeting.
