The shooting of an 450-pound gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo has sparked outrage. The endangered animal was killed after a child fell into the enclosure over the Memorial Day weekend. As many protest the decision, Jack Hanna stands behind the zoo.

"I agree 1000% because I've worked with gorilla's for over 35 years. A tranquilizer would have been 5 to 10 minutes before taking effect. It's a millisecond decision and they made the correct one. We're sorry for this whole thing but thankful a human is alive because the decision the Cincinnati zoo made," Hanna told CBS This Morning.

Cincinnati Zoo Director Thane Maynard responded to backlash during a news conference. "That child's life was in danger. People who question that don't understand you can't take a risk with a silverback gorilla -- this is a dangerous animal. Looking back, we'd make the same decision. The child is safe," said Maynard.

Hanna has advice for parents. "The zoo is one of the safest places to go. Parents just watch your kids."

A petition has started to hold the parents responsible and get "Justice for Harambe." It already has close to 200,000 signatures.

It is believed the situation was caused by parental negligence and the zoo is not responsible for the child's injuries and possible trauma. We the undersigned want the parents to be held accountable for the lack of supervision and negligence that caused Harambe to lose his life.

Michelle Gregg, the mother of the boy, defended herself on Facebook, saying "God protected my child until the authorities were able to get to him. My son is safe and was able to walk away with a concussion and a few scrapes... no broken bones or internal injuries. As a society we are quick to judge how a parent could take their eyes off of their child and if anyone knows me I keep a tight watch on my kids. Accidents happen..."
