Breaking News: Shooting at Proctor Football Game in Utica

(Updated 9:00 a.m. 9/10/23) A security guard was shot outside the Proctor High School football game on Saturday afternoon, according to Utica Police. Police say the shooting occurred when a security officer was trying to break up a fight just outside the stadium perimeter. Police say, the security guard was shot in the back of the head at about 4:21 pm.

The officer, not identified, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

The stadium was placed on lockdown and the area around the school is blocked by police.

A witness told WIBX the shooter was not a student at Proctor High School.

Lt. Mike Curley says the shooter is at large. The stadium was placed on lockdown, police say. The area surrounding the school and the stadium have also been secured.

On September 9, 2023 at approximately 1608hrs a report of shots fired with a victim struck was reported at 1203 Hilton Ave, Proctor High School. This occurred just following a varsity football game between Proctor High School and Binghamton High School. The game was just concluding when an altercation broke out outside of the football stadium, yet still on school grounds in a parking lot.

During the course of the altercation at least two Utica City School District Security staff attempted to intervene to break up the fight. While doing so, at least two gun shots were fired, one striking a school security staff in the back of the head. Currently he is at a local Utica hospital in critical, but stable condition. At this point we will not be releasing his name, however we are offering our sincerest prayers for a full recovery. We would also be remiss if we did not mention the heroics of this security officer and the others who attempted to break up the fight and put themselves in harm’s way so the spectators and students watching the game were not in danger.

The Utica Police Department Major Crimes Unit has been assigned the case, and currently pouring through surveillance and social media videos in order to develop suspect and other information about the incident.
