It’s Now OK to Make Ice Cream with Liquor in New York State
Businesses have been given permission to manufacture and sell ice cream in New York using liquor as an ingredient.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a measure sponsored by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, an Endwell Democrat.
In a statement, Cuomo said the law will "boost small businesses while helping to put them on a path of sustained growth."
The percentage of alcohol in the liquor-infused ice cream will be limited to 5 percent by volume.
Warning labels will be required on ice cream products that contain liquor.
In the news release issued by Cuomo's office Monday, Lupardo said "distilleries are especially enthusiastic about the potential for NY spirits in NY ice cream."
Lupardo said the move allowing liquor as an ingredient in specialty ice creams would help state dairy farmers and producers.
The Senate and Assembly passed the bill last March. It was signed into law by the governor Monday.
