If you've driven along State Route 5 in Westmoreland recently and noticed the tall wooden posts standing out front, you may have wondered what's being built behind them. The answer is something that's been more than a decade in the making.

Frontier Roads is officially opening its gates, bringing a little bit of the Old West to Central New York.

It's the vision of David Peet, who says this project has been in the planning, designing, and building stages for the past 10 to 12 years.

Growing up during the era of cowboy legends like Roy Rogers and loving the magic and storytelling of classic Disney attractions, Peet decided to combine those inspirations into one destination that's unlike anything else you'll find in these here parts.

More Than Just Ice Cream

One of the first things visitors will notice is the Saskatoon Creamery, already serving up hand-dipped ice cream with hot food expected to be added to the menu soon.

Whether you're stopping in for a cone on a summer evening or grabbing a bite to eat, it's designed to be a place where families can slow down and spend some time together.

And there's plenty more on the way.

A general store is getting ready to open featuring a bakery, dirty sodas, fresh produce, gourmet popcorn and other unique treats. It's all part of Peet's vision of creating an old-fashioned gathering place where people can shop, relax and enjoy the experience.

Something for Everyone

Kids will have their own place to explore too. An arcade is being added, while outside you'll find a peaceful stocked pond that's home to bluegill, bass, and even colorful koi fish.

The pond also features a pier that will serve as an entertainment venue throughout the season.

For the grand opening celebration on Thursday, July 23, Bella Scholl and Peter Abbe will perform live from 5:30 until 8:30 PM, giving visitors the perfect soundtrack for a summer evening by the water.

Big Plans for the Future

Even though Frontier Roads is just getting started, David Peet already has plenty of ideas for what's next.

Plans include a working mill house, seasonal apple and pumpkin attractions, spaces for local art shows and opportunities for area businesses and artisans to showcase what they create.

This isn't meant to be just another roadside stop. It's being built as a destination where people can gather, support local businesses and make memories with family and friends.
