It’s Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Weekend in Canastota (6/6-6/9)
While Wild West FrogFest and Rodeo is celebrating the 25th anniversary next weekend (6/15), the Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota is celebrating their 24 Induction this weekend. Organizers have announced a long list of boxers, celebrities and bands for the festivities. Click to see the list and schedule of events.
Canastota will host 40 plus boxing stars this weekend. Festivities include a banquet, a night of welterweight warriors, parade, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, cocktail party and the Official Induction Ceremony honoring the Class of 2013.
It all culminates with the "Parade of Champions" on Sunday afternoon at one. More than 40 boxers will be attending the parade that runs through downtown Canastota's Peterboro Street to the Hall of Fame Museum for the induction ceremony. Those attending include:
Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Sergio Martinez, “Irish” Micky Ward, Pipino Cuevas, Aaron “The Hawk” Pryor, Julian Jackson, Mia St. John, Earnie Shavers, Gerry Cooney, Gaspar Ortega, Tony DeMarco, Danny “Little Red” Lopez, Tracy Harris Patterson and many more.
Actress Rosie Perez, from such well known movies as, "White Men Can't Jump" is this year's Grand Marshall. Fort Drum's 10th Mountain Division Band will be one of several pageant caliber bands, drum and bugle corps, pipe bands and floats participating in parade.
This year's inductees are:
Arturo “Thunder” Gatti (posthumous)(pictured), five-time world champion Virgil “Quicksilver” Hill and two-time junior flyweight champion Myung-Woo Yuh in the Modern category; “Let’s Get It On” referee Mills Lane, ring announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr. (pictured) and journalist Colin Hart. Posthumous inductees in the Old-Timer, Pioneer, Non-Participant and Observer categories will also be honored.
