How big of turkey will you need to feed everyone this Thanksgiving? The Guestimator from Save the Food.com will plan out your entire feast right down to the pie.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation is raising awareness about how much food we waste. Estimates put it at 40%, when you include food that has gone bad and preparing too much for meal. That's what started The Guestimator project.

It's a great way to plan out any meal, especially when it comes to feeding a house full of people during the Holidays. You input how many people will be eating, how many are small eaters, average eaters and big eaters; then how many leftovers you'd like. It even takes into account the traditional Thanksgiving day menu, vegetarian meal or a smorgasbord.

I gave it a twirl for our small Thanksgiving get-together of 3 people, average eaters and 3 meals of leftovers.  Here's what it told me:

  • Turkey 4.5lbs
  • 10oz of veggies
  • 2.5 potatos
  • 4 cups of grains/rice
  • 1 casserole dish
  • stuffing 2 cups
  • pie 1

It all makes sense, although there is never enough stuffing. Try out The Guestimator for yourself.
