A horse was put down after a horse and buggy hit and run in Newport and police are looking for the driver responsible.

The accident happened just after 8 a.m. on Summit Road in Newport Wednesday, January 2. New York State Trooper Jack Keller says they are searching for a 2013 or 2014 metallic blue Chevrolet Traverse. The vehicle will have significant front end damage.

Thee horse was  euthanized due to a severed leg. The operator of the buggy, 39-year old Christ Zook of Poland, was not injured in the crash.
