There may not be a shorter production season that producing maple syrup. But that doesn't mean it's not a year round job. Cornell Cooperative Extension says fall is an important time to prepare for the upcoming season.

Fall is important in getting prepared for collecting sap next spring and also a good time to check on the health of your trees. Summer storms, lighting and new growth can bring down suspended maple tubing or block your woods roads. Tubing is easier to work with and make repairs during warmer weather. It is more beneficial to remove fallen branches and repair tubing now before the snow starts. Lines that get buried in the snow must be pulled out or dug out. Now is also a good time to check for insect or disease damage on the trees.

It's also a time to be extra careful in the woods with hunting season in full swing. For more information on maple syrup production, state regulations and other helpful tips, check out CCE's maple program page.
