It's almost indisputable that one of the best parts of fall is the beauty of the leaves changing color. Now that it's officially fall, it's time to schedule a train ride to look at upstate New York's fall foliage.

New York Upstate compiled a list of eight fall foliage trains across the state. You better plan to take a trip sooner than later though, because according to this fall foliage tracker, peak season is on its way at the beginning of October.

Utica Station, 321 Main St., Utica, NY 13501

Thendara Station (Old Forge), 2568 State Route 28, Thendara, NY 13472

This 9-hour train ride takes you north into the Adirondacks. Between the rides among the trees and rivers, there is a 4.5-hour layover in Old Forge to explore the local shops and restaurants. Tickets range from $32.50 to $62.50 with rides scheduled through the end of October.  

278 Main St., Arcade, NY 14009

Explore fall in Western New York with this 2-hour, 20-minute train ride. You'll take a short break halfway through the trip to take a self-guided tour of Curriers Station antique Train Depot. These rides run Saturdays and Sundays October 4-27. Tickets range from $16 to $19.

149 Aaron Court, Kingston, NY 12401

Ulster County's only scenic train will take you on a scenic journey through the Catskill mountains on this 1-hour, 15-minute trip. Not only do they have fall foliage trips through the middle of October, they have four Pumpkin Express trips at the end of October that allow riders to pick their own pumpkin to take home. Halloween costumes are encouraged. Tickets for the rides range from $8 to $18.

136 East Main St., Milford, NY 13807

This train ride will take you through a variety of scenic parts of New York, including the banks of the Susquehanna River, farm fields and forests with colorful foliage. This 2.5-hour trip starts this weekend and runs through the middle of October. Tickets range from $14 to $17.

3510 State Hwy 28, Arkville, NY 12406

While this railroad does not have one particular trip dedicated to its local fall foliage, all the trips are well-known for showcasing the beautiful changing colors of the leaves in the Catskills. Tickets range from $12 to $18 and rides run Saturdays and Sundays.

530 West Ave., Medina, NY 14103

Explore Western New York with this 2-hour ride along the Erie Canal. You can even get the full experience by ordering lunch at checkout, because your lunch will come in a reusable keepsake Media Railroad Museum lunch tote. Tickets range from $18 to $36 for dates throughout October.

5881 Stone Hill Road, Lakeville, NY, 14480

Take a 1-hour, 45-minute trip on this vintage 1941 coach to witness the beauty of fall foliage in upstate New York. This is a one-day event on October 5 with three boarding times at 9:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $30.

6393 E. River Rd, West Henrietta, NY 14586

Train rides through the beauty of autumn in upstate New York come free with admission to the New York Museum of Transportation. Train rides run Sundays through the end of October and admission to the museum ranges from $6 to $8.
