Early reports indicates three pests may be harming NY farm fields.  Ken Wise with Cornell Cooperative Extension and Integrated Pest Management says now is the time to check fields for signs of damage.
In the NY Weekly Crops Pest Report, Wise says some early reports of black cutworm and true army worm have been reported in corn fields and potato leaf hoppers in alfalfa. Here's what to look for..

Black Cutworm larvae vary in color from light gray to black with a pale brown to black head. Larvae have a greasy, shiny appearance with coarse granules present over their body.

True armyworm larvae appear smooth cylindrical pale green too brownish when they are still small.

Potato leafhopper is a lime-green insect about 1/8 inch long
